Chimpanzees and Bonobos: Our Closest Living Relatives
The Bonobo: Hippie of the Ape World
Bonobos (Pan paniscus), once known as pygmy chimpanzees, are renowned for their unusually peaceful nature, earning them the moniker "hippies of the ape world."
Matriarchal Society
Unlike their chimpanzee cousins, bonobos live in highly social, matriarchal communities. These groups can be large, with up to 120 individuals, and are often led by females.
Subgroups and Communication
Bonobos form subgroups of 2-15 individuals, each with its own social hierarchy. They communicate through a complex system of vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions.
