DOH Reports Travel-Related Cases
The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed multiple travel-related cases of dengue fever in the state. The virus has been detected in individuals who have recently traveled to areas where dengue is prevalent.
Symptoms of Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms typically develop within 4-10 days after being bitten and can include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Skin rash
Prevention of Dengue Fever
There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but symptoms can be managed with rest, fluids, and pain medication. The best way to prevent infection is to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including:
- Using insect repellent
- Wearing long sleeves and pants
- Eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed
